Today’s verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for the American consumer. It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices. It is unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and other companies. Consumers have the right to choices, and they know what they are buying when they purchase Samsung products. This is not the final word in this case or in battles being waged in courts and tribunals around the world, some of which have already rejected many of Apple’s claims. Samsung will continue to innovate and offer choices for the consumer.”
It is not just about Rectangles and Squares, it is about getting things right and arranging it in the best way possible. It reminds me of the Kearns and Ford story. Kearns put together the wiper and ford just copied it and argued that Kearns didn’t invent all the other parts. Kearns then got a book and seems to have told whether the writer of the book invented all the words in the book.
After looking at Samsung, makes me think what it hasn’t copied from Apple other than the brand name. I can compare it to HTC which I own and I can say that HTC has done it without copying Apple the way Samsung has done.
Going through the statement which says it is a loss for the American Consumer, makes me feel that Samsung has its stomach filled and doesn’t have an appetite for Innovation. Copying and branding it with its name is not Innovation. Now, Samsung really has a chance to win the American consumers by bringing in disruptive innovation.
Consumers do have a right to choice and it is a choice which Samsung also has. It has a choice to Innovate or blatantly Copy. Samsung Galaxy Ace looks straight like an iPhone 4 copy. If the company is pride of Innovation then the end product should matter the most. A monopoly over rectangles and corners is not a good way of bringing the facts into place. How? Is the most important question to be answered.
On a third vector, I felt Microsoft has understood the game better. It has seen the way Apple has brought about a revolution in UX. Now with the Cloud, Enterprise blocks and dev tools, MS launched its own tablet and OS which looks good. Yes, it is learning and it might take a few iterations, but this will be the bet to go forward. With it very good enterprise support services, MS can push tablets and phones as an enterprise toys and make it work big.
So Sammy, you ought to innovate. If you copy then you pay for it and if you innovate, then you get paid for it. YOUR CHOICE – We will wait for the best from you as we are the once who will be benefitted the most!! Best of Luck!!
